As a writer, I have always felt a mystical connection with the spiritual beliefs of Native Americans. Their respect for the earth, for nature, their advanced understanding and wonder of the universe has felt to be a comfortable place in my soul. Admittedly, my illusory bond was partially inspired by an improbable tale told for generations in my family, of a young woman who fell in love with a famous war chief, and when forbidden to consummate their romance, she secretly became his bride and mother to his children. An improbable ancestral story, just a folk tale really, until recently I received the results from a DNA test and discovered my own Native American ancestry. As they say, inside every folktale is a kernel of truth—this discovery and spiritual reconnection for me has been a wonderful epiphany.
